GALWAY UNITED 0, LEEDS UNITED 2

Last night Leeds utd played there second pre season friendly and picked up there first win. A few players have traveled to Ireland with the squad on trial and got a chance in the team last night.

Leeds United team: Ankergren (Martin 74), Richardson (Gardner 74), Telfer (Michalik 74), Huntington, Sheehan (Parker 74), Howson (Bayly 62), Hughes (Douglas 62), Johnson (Sweeney 62), Beckford (Haber 62), Showunmi, Robinson (Prutton 62). Subs: Marques.

Galway are midd season at the minute and it was clear they had a good level of fitness creating a few chances but Huntington and trialest Telfer where more than up to the job

Leeds created a few chance of there own with Beckford been ruled offside and Andrew Hughes shooting wide, Leeds then scored only to be disallowed for off side but it was clear Beckford was getting closer.

On the 25th minute Beckford scored his second pre season goal, Robinson delivered the pass and beckford scored with ease.

Frazer Richardson and Howson both and chances before the first half came to a end, it had been a reasonable entertaining half with both teams playing good football.

The start of the second half saw Beckford pick up the ball just over the half way line and make a good run slotting the ball in to the net to make 0 – 2 to Leeds.

With both teams making a number of substitution’s in the second half the game became scrappy with leeds running out 2 – 0 winners.

Canadian under-21 international Marcus Haber came on in the 62nd minute but did’t really do anything to shine but Telfer who is also on trial and a solid game and could well become one of our signings this season.

All in all a good run out from the boys and another win and two more goals from Beckford, all is looking good so far.

Enoch Showunmi is one of the new arrivals at Elland road this season. Showunmi is a big striker with bags of pace, this is what he has done so far in his career.

Showunmi’s first professional contract came with Luton when he signed for them from Willesden Constantine in September 2003, the striker was then 21.

His debut came against Plymouth Argyle in September 2003 and his first goal was against Rushden & Diamonds in the LDV Vans Trophy.

Showunmi started slowly at Luton with clear signs he had come from non league football but he improved with each game and scored a hat-trick in a home match against Brentford. In total he scored 7 goals in 28 appearances during the 2003-04 season.

On May 30 2004 he made his international debut for the Nigerian national team as a 71st minute substitute in a 3-0 victory against the Republic of Ireland.

The 2004-05 season saw Luton’s promotion and Showunmi was regularly used as a “super-sub” to score 6 goals in 38 matches, of which he started only 7 times.

For the 2006-07 season he moved to Bristol city on a free transfer, he started well at Bristol scoring in 3 consecutive games making him an instant fans’ favourite.

He finished the season as the clubs second top goal scorer with 13 goals in all competitions.

On 23 January 2008 Leeds utd made an offer for the striker, but he decided to stay and fight for his place at Bristol, only to then join Sheffield Wednesday on an emergency loan until 1 March.

Showunmi was not given a new contract by Bristol and signed for Leeds utd on 7 July on a 2 year contract.

Canadian under-21 international Marcus Haber has joined Leeds utd on trial and is hoping he can make a big impact while he is with the club in Ireland.Haber was out of contract with Dutch side Groningen and has joined Leeds on the pre-season tour of Ireland.

Haber had this to say:

“My previous stint was in Holland and I’m out of contract there now,”

“Leeds were interested so I’m happy to be here at a club with so much history and I hope I can impress.”

“I think everyone knows about the history of Leeds. They were in the Champions League not so long ago, and the Premiership. I know the club had financial problems, but I would love to be a part in helping them get back up there.”

“In Canada the level isn’t as high,”

“At 17 I made my way over to Holland and that’s where I’ve been for the last two seasons.”

“Of course it’s tough when you are on trial somewhere, but I’m itching to get running and show what I can do.”
